Colombia is a country of 46.2 million people, 74 percent living in urban centers. Almost half of all Colombians live in poverty. With Afro-Colombian, indigenous and Spanish roots, the country’s diversity is reflected in both the people and culture. Unfortunately, the situation of poverty is often stratified according to these ethnic divisions as well. Afro-Colombian and Amerindians suffer higher rates of poverty and are the most affected by violence. On the other hand, many places in Colombia are developing into high class tourist destinations and cosmopolitan centers. This development, although positive in many ways, is contributing to a widening gap between the rich and poor.
