Teaching resource trade-offs with a simple game loop

One classroom exercise for older students is to compare decisions in a short incremental game, then transfer the reasoning to water-resource planning. Search For The Needle is a Roblox game about collecting hay, selling it and choosing upgrades. Its Search For The Needle guide explains how carrying capacity, collection speed and other upgrades address different bottlenecks. Before play, ask students to predict which constraint will limit a run. Afterwards, have them note whether collection, capacity or trips to sell actually slowed them down. Then move to a water-education scenario: when a community has limited time and budget, how can we identify the actual constraint before recommending a conservation measure? The game is an analogy for prioritisation, not a source of water facts. Pair it with Project WET activities and real local water data for the science. Has anyone used simple simulations to help students distinguish observed constraints from assumptions?
