Sued by Nelson & Kennard Law Firm? My experience and what I learned

I recently got served papers from Nelson & Kennard over an old debt I barely recognized. At first I panicked, but after digging into their history, I found out they are a high volume collection law firm based in California that files lawsuits for debt buyers and original creditors like Capital One or Synchrony Bank. What surprised me: they don’t actually own the debt – they just represent whoever does. And because they process so many cases, they make frequent paperwork errors. In my case, they misidentified the original creditor on the summons. That alone can be an FDCPA violation (there’s a known 9th Circuit case, Tourgeman v. Nelson & Kennard, exactly about this).I also learned you only have 20-30 days from the date you were served to file a written Answer with the court. If you miss that deadline, they can get a default judgment and garnish your wages or freeze your bank account.I’m not a lawyer, but I wanted to share in case anyone else is dealing with them. Check the summons carefully for wrong creditor names, request debt verification in writing, and don’t ignore the court date. Has anyone here successfully fought them or settled for less?More detail I found helpful:https://consumerlawfirmcenter.com/legal-calls-from-nelson-kennard/
