How Do You Track Irregular Working Patterns Without Micromanaging Employees?

Many managers focus on productivity numbers, but I believe work patterns can tell a much bigger story.Recently, our team started looking at irregular working patterns such as frequent overtime, late-night work, missed breaks, unusual login times, and sudden changes in productivity. We found that these patterns often helped us identify workload issues before they affected employee performance or wellbeing. The challenge is finding the right balance. Employees want trust and flexibility, while businesses need visibility into how work is getting done. Some questions I would love to hear opinions on:

  • What irregular work patterns do you monitor?
  • How do you identify potential burnout risks?
  • Do you track overtime and idle time?
  • How do you ensure employee privacy while monitoring work activity?
  • Have you found any tools that help analyze work patterns effectively?

In our experience, tracking trends rather than individual moments has been the most helpful approach. Looking at long-term changes in work habits provides useful insights without creating a culture of micromanagement.I'm interested in learning how other organizations handle this. What has worked best for your team when trying to track irregular working patterns and support employee wellbeing?
