Boss says just use my health insurance – is that legal?

So I hurt my hand pretty bad last week while moving furniture at a small office in Rochester, and when I told my boss I wanted to file a workers comp claim, he basically laughed and said they don't do that because it would raise their premiums. He told me to just use my personal health insurance and he'd cover the deductible out of pocket. That sounds sketchy to me, but I've never been through this before and I don't want to cause trouble if he's actually trying to help. I started reading online and it seems like employers in New York are required to carry coverage, so is he even allowed to skip filing? A friend said I should talk to a New York work injury attorney just to know my rights before agreeing to anything, but I'm worried about burning bridges at a small company. Has anyone else had an employer try to go around the system like this, and how did it end up for you? I don't want to get stuck with surprise medical bills later if my health insurance decides not to pay for a work related injury.
